The Budapest Centre for Long-term Sustainability (BC4LS) is a European research and education centre as well as a professional and cultural meeting point. Its work starts from a question that has shaped economics since its beginnings: how can development and the highest possible level of well-being be secured for the members of society, and how can growth stay sustainable over the long run?
Sustainable development does not only mean that growth uses less material and energy. It also means that its benefits are shared more fairly across society. A sustainable future therefore depends on transforming the way we think and on creating new foundations for growth – the common thread that runs through the centre’s research, talks and publications.
The research programme is organised around six themes: Sustainable Economics & Development; Digital Transformation & Innovation; Green Society & Education; Sustainable Geopolitics & Geoeconomics; Sustainable Natural Resources; and Fusions, which brings these fields together – for example climate challenges and green innovative solutions, or the natural and social sciences. Visiting scholars from a wide range of disciplines are welcome to join this interdisciplinary community.
The centre is housed in a renovated late-baroque building on Úri street, in the heart of Budapest’s Castle district, opposite the medieval tower of the Church of Mary Magdalene. Built at the end of the 18th century, the house has served many purposes over the years and is now home to the centre’s lectures, workshops and meetings.
The BC4LS Talks series on the media page invites researchers and experts to look at long-term sustainability from different angles, while the publications section collects studies and papers, including the 95 Theses for Long-term Sustainability. Articles and interviews follow current debates on sustainable economics, green finance and the future of globalisation.
